Requesting an Increment of the Salary, Essay Example

Essay

To Whom It May Concern:

I recently submitted a letter requesting a pay increase due to the amount of time and effort I have devoted to this institution. As previously stated, I have been a very dedicated employee for about eight years now and this is a sign of the professionalism, dedication, and hard work it takes to succeed in the nursing profession. Along with the lengthy employment history at this hospital, I decided it was in my best interest as well as the patients’ to return to school in order to learn more skills and ensure that I could provide the highest level of care possible in any given situation. I believe the skills I learned in school helped bridge the gap between being a licensed practical nurse and a registered nurse, thus improving the level of care received by patients.

In comparison, there are more responsibilities required of a registered nurse. The patients’ medical needs must be considered while performing routine tasks, but there are underlying conditions that are also assessed many times and LPNs have not undergone the extensive training required to meet the criteria needed in order to do this effectively. In addition, a registered nurse also carries the responsibility for duties that are not performed by LPNs and also the liability for these duties. Duties such as hanging blood, pushing medications through IVs, hanging chemotherapy, and titrating medications seem like routine daily tasks but can mean the difference between the life and death of a patient if they are performed improperly. It is important that the nurse performing these tasks is capable and trained to do so. A registered nurse is.

In addition to the above duties, initial assessments are supposed to be performed by RNs. Also, they are responsible for the formulating of a patient’s diagnosis and the planning of patient care. These plans are delegated to an LPN after the fact. While the two groups of nurses do indeed work side by side, it is the RN who is the team leader in all situations and I clearly understand the added responsibilities that are expected of me.

Also, when a patient codes, it is the RN who is in charge of handling this until the physician arrives at the scene. It is important to understand the RN has so many more responsibilities and duties than an LPN in almost every aspect of the nursing profession no matter how you view the overall picture. While the job of an LPN is important, ultimately it is the RN who is needed in order to care for a patient and administer the medications and therapy prescribed by the physician. The LPN is more of a supporting team member and a nursing salary should be reflective upon that.

The average RN salary in Boston, MA is $92,000. While I understand this is a large amount and more than the hospital can feasibly honor due to budgetary restrictions and economic shortfalls, I respectfully ask for you to reconsider my request to honor a pay raise reflective of my diligence and hard work in obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing. I believe as a dedicated and long term employee of this honorable institution, it is only fair that if I am performing the duties and responsibilities of a RN I should be compensated as such.

Respectfully,
