This statement reflects the importance of research and theory as two concepts joined together under unique circumstances. Through theoretical principles, it is possible to develop research questions and strategies that draw new conclusions regarding a given subject area (Montmarquet, 2003). In this context, induction and deduction are utilized interchangeably to facilitate research questions and make assumptions regarding the protocols at work.

The process of Explanation and Application within a research paper requires a researcher to identify and solve a number of problems related to specific research questions. By ruling out factors that may prohibit viable solutions to a problem (Clarke, 1999), it is likely that explanations will be determined, and application of these research principles will be effectively established. Therefore, explanation and application projects are designed to ensure that research questions are answered in great detail, and the appropriate application of these questions to a given subject area will be successful (Pruett, 2007).

Multiple measures of crime are critical in order to determine how crime infiltrates communities in different ways. Since many types of crimes are committed on a regular basis, there must be multiple measures in place in order to evaluate these crimes and develop viable solutions. One form of punishment for prisoners in response to these measures is that of the chain gang, which requires manual labor in a variety of forms in order to satisfy a need in the community. By measuring the effects of crime across communities, it is possible that punishments in the form of chain gangs may be established to teach prisoners a lesson regarding the harm that they have caused to a community.
