How to Resolve Conflicts and Ethical Principles of Nursing

Standardized ethical codes are very important because it helps people face hard situations and create the best possible decisions. The ethical codes of medicine are there because the decisions nurses and doctors should form are too complicated for people to resolve specifically. A nurse whose personal moral code conflicts with the regulations of ethical medical practice should still go as per the profession’s standardized ethics (Russo, 2006).  She should use her own judgment to have the six principles of ethical nursing balance in the way that best suits the situation:

Tackle the issue from the viewpoint of beneficence, or performing good. It is the responsibility of a nurse to do the most fair for the patient. In the other hand it is the responsibility of a nurse to take action when you see the required, rather than to just sit back.

Evaluate the issue from the perception of non-maleficence, or doing no harm. This is the cardinal ethical oath for medical practitioners. In a situation where it is quite impossible to do better or all every options do both harm and good, choose the option that does less harm.

Offer a lot of respect to autonomy of the people that are involved in the issue. When your personal beliefs or moral principles are different from the morals or wishes of a patient, it is the patient’s right to create decisions affecting his own life (Russo, 2006). As a doctor or nurse, you are ethically required to honor and respect your patient’s right to autonomy.

Act to disrupt the ethical practices only when justice requires it. The ethical principle of justice allows doctors and nurses a right to take unusual courses of action when extenuating circumstances makes accepted practice not fair and demand unusual alternatives.
