The Modern Middle East (Chapter I and II) by James Galvin

The writing of Galvin about the Middle Eastern parts of the world and how their culture affects the international relations and vice versa specifically manages to respond to controversial parts of the region’s most important points of history. The first chapter specifically opens with an introduction to the 9/11 incident in the United States that shook the overall attention of the world towards the culture of the Middle Eastern regions of the world. Relatively, the conditions of development that is undergone in relation to the investigation of the case seems to point out on suspects coming from the Middle Eastern regions, likely coming from the Moslem believers, Galvin points out that usually, the social stereotype that specifically identifies the reaction of the world towards the Moslem religion and its basic values even determines the situation further.

Considerably, Galvin discusses further into the issue; he notes how the Moslem community around the world got affected by the situation and how the world view about them has become more negative. People coming from the Middle Eastern race became more concerned about how they are going to be accepted by other nations and their people; especially in regions in the United States. In his writing, Galvin pointed out that this reaction was more than what was necessary. Even before the incident, people coming from the Middle Eastern region have already been sensed to have a great trust and connection with their religion and how it is supposed to be recognized as part of their lives. Considerably, being stereotyped was already a common reaction against them. The direction of the investigations and the implications that such discoveries are pointing out to, such pattern of stereotyping continues to develop accordingly.

Chapter two on the other hand talks about the concept of modernity and how Middle East follows through the said global movement especially among economically strong nations including those that are in the said region. In this chapter, Galvin tries to point out that no matter how supposedly able certain parts of the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Iran are in redefining the process of accommodation of the nation towards development, the stereotyping the people receive from other nations around the globe continues to hurt the status of the Middle Eastern region as a while.

The overall approach of Galvin could be considered effective especially when it comes to define the current condition of the Middle Eastern region and the countries included in it especially when it comes to the process of making a distinct action towards modernization and how their current identity in the face of the aspect of international relations specifically affect such process of being fully able to determine a path towards national progress. Taking from his distinct presentation of data, Galvin’s writing specifically give attention to the most common and yet most neglected issues that are pointed out to the members of the Middle Eastern countries. He insists that somehow, even though the countries from the said region specifically work hard towards being recognized in the field of economic competition, the option of changing their identity and the way they are recognized as terrorists around the globe cannot be avoided nor changed. Hence, it is then assumed that the condition of development that the Middle Eastern countries would take could actually affect their position in the field of economic stability, however, it will not change the fact that these nations will continue to be set aside from the others; notably, such definition creates a comprehensive blueprint of development that the region might be able to take into account, but would not be able to avoid the specific point of recognition the people receive from the international scene.
