Thesis Paper

Step 1:Choose the information you want discuss in youressay.

What similarities/differences in the KAIROS are you discussing?

Text 1: In “On Women’s Right to Vote”, Susan B. Anthony makes use of kairos because her topic was timely and necessary. Since she spoke at a time when women were not afforded the same rights as men, she took action and voted since this right was technically not denied to her according to the Constitution. Because she delivered the speech at her trial, the speech had kairos because it was relevant to the moment in which it was spoken.

Text 2: In “Women’s Rights are Human Rights”, Hillary Clinton uses kairos in a similar manner that Susan B. Anthony does. She presents her view on women’s rights at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, and the timeliness of this presentation makes her speech relevant in timing both because of the conference date and the issues that the modern world is facing regarding women’s rights.

What similarities/differences in the RHETORICAL STRATEGY are you discussing?

Text 1: Susan B. Anthony uses logos throughout her speech by using deductive reasoning and citing trustworthy examples; she refers to the Constitution and well-known politicians and therefore authorities on the matter of politics throughout her speech.

Text 2: Hillary Clinton also uses logos in her speech to demonstrate her message. She cites the WHO, the Chernobyl incident, crime statistics, and the Declaration of Independence to demonstrate the logic behind her points.

Step 2: Write down the draft of your thesis statement.

While Susan B. Anthony and Hillary Clinton came from different time periods, they argue the issue of women’s rights with skilled rhetoric by taking advantage of kairos and logos. Both rhetors are effective and have excellent sense of audience, but Susan B. Anthony focuses more on the elements of logos and ethos while Hillary Clinton makes use of logos and pathos.

Step 3: Compare what your draft contains compared to the information you gave in Step 1. Are each of them present? Are they clear in your thesis statement?

Yes.

Step 4: Asses your thesis statement on these criteria.

  • Is it clear? Yes.
  • Is it arguable? Yes.
  • Is it specific? Yes.
  • Is it complex? Yes.
  • Is it interesting? Yes.
