Role Development for Doctoral Advance Nursing Practice, Essay Example

Abstract

This paper explains why the Doctor of Nursing Practice is not just a degree but also a role. It also explains the various roles that are being performed by the DNP that is only exclusive to them.

DNP is a role and not just a degree. Contrary to the popular belief that Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is just a degree, I believe that DNP is a role. An acquisition of a degree comes with certain roles. It distinguishes them from one profession to another. For example, a general medical practitioner has roles that are different from a surgeon doctor. Although there may be similarities, there will always be one factor that separates them from each other such as specialty. This is the very same thing that is surrounding the issue of whether or not DNP is just a degree or is it a role too. For me, DNP is a role. DNPs have roles that a regular nurse cannot perform in the absence of further study or acquisition of the DNP degree. The role is primarily evidence-based. It also includes, but is not limited to, the translation of research on healthcare into practice and the implementation of strategies and innovations that can enhance clinical practices and health care. As the level of education increases, there are more tasks and functions that are being included in the title (Moran, et.al, 2013). Such functions are the roles that a person with just a baccalaureate educational attainment and not speciality cannot qualify to perform. Yes it is true that DNP is a form of advancing in the field of nursing. However, as DNPs are advancing, their role in the health care system is also advancing. They can now influence decision-making and changes in the policies because of their expertise and education (Dreher & Glasgow, 2010). Their role in teaching, research and clinical practice is advanced and should not be taken for granted. As a matter of fact, degree is important if someone wants to further their impact and role in any profession. A degree paves the way for trying on new roles and responsibilities that are not otherwise available without one.
