Romantic Love Among Americans, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 721

Essay

Nacirema speaks of how words of the mouth are so important, that if this was not practiced, a number of things will happen which include the rejection of lovers. There is a connection which is believed to be between speaking words and morals between people. This is seen in America’s culture of love and romance. You see mostly that people are so quick to say how they feel, more than how they show the feelings to prove their existence. Words of the mouth in connection to romantic love are so common and can be practiced by anyone.

You see this in today’s culture of movies and music. People proclaim their “ever-lasting” love through words which they speak, rather than letting their actions speak for them. This type of culture is backed by how society requires wedding vows, that two people can be wed and committed to each other by just speaking the words “I do”. It is as if those two words have some magical power which can bind people together more than anything in the world.

Love is also said to be like living – it is an art. It does not matter who you are or how old you may be, love happens. However, it is something you have to be careful with, and in order to be able to handle this love properly, you need to be able to develop yourself through your personality. Love is said to be the most exciting and exhilarating experience in life. Being shut-off from the world and in love is something no one wants in their lives, as love is something so wonderful.

Romantic love can also be seen in stages, there is the infatuation which is the most overwhelming part of love, and then comes intimacy, and soon boredom then comes the disappointments. After all of this, the excitement which comes with love soon fades away. Even though in the beginning of all the love, they do not see this coming, and everything may seem perfect the way it is.

Romantic love is very important in America’s culture. It gives people a feeling that they are not alone in life. This type of love gives people hope and a sense of belonging, and people wrap themselves in the fairy-tale idea of love where there are always happy endings. Love is something a lot of people speak of, but yet there really is no one definition for it. You can have a different level or definition of love depending on so many different things.

America’s culture reflects on how people perceive love, and how they want to be loved. You see this through advertising, where people are always aiming to be “seen” or to be “noticed” by someone in advertisements of cosmetic products. Commercials which show clothes and fashion always show a group of people, or a couple, showing that you need those clothes in order to be loved and not alone. Additionally, there are those commercials which show happy families, or couples who are in love, safe in their homes with products such as detergents, household sprays, etc. The fact that there are so many commercials focusing on how people naturally commune shows that there is a fear of being alone. The opposite of this being alone is being loved.

Another major influence on how America sees love is in the entertainment industry. Love is such a big seller when it comes to movies. Week after week there is a new romantic comedy or a drama being released in the cinemas. The public thrives for these kinds of stories and hopes that their lives will somehow end up the same way. This can also be seen in the numerous romantic series on television, getting people hooked on them, watching every week. Songs and music throughout time have an ongoing theme also of romantic love and the different ideas of it. They sing of finding new love, heartbreak and everything in between.

Romantic love is very important in America’s society. It makes people feel like they are connected to each other, one way or another. Love is said to be an art, yet there are many different perspectives of it, depending on how people see it. How you define love or more specifically romantic love is entirely up to you. Only your experiences can tell how you perceive it.
