Essay

Who are you?

I am living with a disability and am therefore drawn towards biology because it will help me gain a greater understanding of my jaundice symptoms in addition to providing me with the ability to help others who have suffered from physical and mental pain as a consequence of their situation. I am especially interested in helping children. My career goal is to attend pharmacy school and become a pharmacist because I believe that knowledge of drug interactions will help prevent medical catastrophe. I believe that the coursework at Gallaudet will prepare me well for this endeavor.

Doing Science

I enjoy science as a whole because it provides humanity with a means by which we can gain an understanding of the world around us. For me, genetics means providing me with the ability to understand human disease related to heredity. I am interested in genetics because it will help me gain a greater understanding of how environmental and genetic factors interplay to cause diseases like jaundice and provide me with information that could help alleviate its symptoms. My role model in the field is Rosalind Franklin because she gave her life for determining the structure of DNA, even though she was not given sufficient credit for her findings. I adore her dedication in addition to her significant contribution to our current understanding of genetics.

Working Collaboratively

I enjoy working in a group provided that everyone completes their work on time, communicates effectively, and maintains a friendly environment. However, if one member is not able to contribute or believes that they are able to blame their group members for failure, then group work is not pleasant. If group work is done correctly, it is beneficial because it ensures that a greater quantity of ideas and experiences will contribute to the final product, which will enhance its efficacy. Everyone needs to take equal responsibility. To avoid problems, it is essential to clearly decide ground rules as a team.
