Ruggiero’s Work on Ethics, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 346

Essay

The work of Ruggiero surely was of enormous help for me in the issues of considering ethical controversies. First of all, I found out the main stages of analyzing moral issues, which in itself is an ambiguous and delicate process. Morality and ethics are not a precise science, they are highly subjective, and at times it is really hard to judge whether the action or the judgment is ethically correct and justifiable or not. This is why the chapters of Ruggiero about the role of majority view, feelings and conscience in the process of solving ethical controversies was essential for me and facilitated my understanding of ethics on the whole.

The first chapter of Ruggiero where he juxtaposes laws and ethics and deals with the importance of ethics alongside with the existence of legal regulations opens up the new limits of understanding the role of ethics in our life and its impact on perception of vice and virtue. It was also interesting for me to find out that even in the framework of modern refusal from the majority view it is still the reflection of ethical principles. It is hard to presuppose that large groups of people from diverse groups of population can produce wrong ethical judgments. So in case of assessing a certain ethical controversy it may be sometimes useful to be guided by the majority view.

Other considerations such as individual feelings and conscience also play an important role in the formation of ethical principles and solving the ethical controversy. So they should not be neglected in the course of ethical studies – in case the majority view is not applicable in some cases, they may be the guiding factors in finding the solution to the ethical problem.

In general it is possible to say that the book of Ruggiero produced a major impact on my vision of ethics and the critical consideration of ethical issues. It contains a huge number of useful facts that may be further utilized in the study of ethics, so the experience of working with this book was really valuable for me.
