Essay

Question 1: Narrative structure relationship to immigrant status

The structure of this novel relates to the immigrant status in that the author depicted a limited amount of characters who were all colored people living in a particular community practicing a different culture. Besides, the central character is a Trinidadian through whom the writer projected the major theme embodied in this novel. An immigrant writer could feel offended because always they believe that non- Caribbean writers have a stereotyped representation of the immigrant‘s culture, which is not authentic ((Selvon, 88).The level of delivery could be adulterated showing that because these people have migrated they are inferior to the new society.

Question 11: Nationality of characters depicted in novel

In the novel Selvon offered a conflicting perspective of his characters’ nationality.  In allowing the main character to manifest his cultural heritage as a Trinidadian is indicating that immigrants while in the British society  still demonstrate characteristics of Caribbean people. Yet in another sense since they seem to be mis-fits in the  new society, due to acquisition of British residency and some citizenship they have the responsibility of being British (Selvon, 135).

Question: 111: Male characters’ pronounced discussion of their Sexual encounters with white women.

In discussing the sexual encounters with white women seemed to be the author’s strategy of projecting how black males perceive white women with whom they have had sexual encounters. The experience shows that black male have accomplished a new social status having slept with a white girl. This was not accessible in the society frm which they came. Besides, blacks were considered inferior to whites so it was an honor for black males to be given such a golden opportunity. For them it was great material to highlight in a conversation (Selvon, 130).
