Essay

Bad Faith: Jean-Paul Sartre was an existentialist.  Within the concepts of his thoughts on Personality he referred to that of “bad faith”.  Within this context Sartre based the premise that all individuals chart their own destiny by freedom of choice and the ability to select their own goals.  This is a freedom by which all individuals are bound and cannot escape from.  You cannot force other beings into a specific course of action.

Anguish: As such all choices have consequences. As such you take on the role of a mere worldly object and therefore bound by circumstance. For example: I cannot go to war because of my religious beliefs.  The concept of doing your patriotic duty and the conflict of personal beliefs have consequences both to you as an individual, your country and your family.

In Choosing myself I chose Man: Here Sartre is reviewing the levels of mankind’s responsibility to himself. Man creates an image of himself that is of his own choosing. “In Choosing myself I choose Man”;  in other words the view of self image is the same for all mankind.  As such Sartre believes that all men are made of the same concepts.  In conclusion Sartre pointed out that “Man is nothing else than what he makes of himself “. We are all responsible for charting our own destiny by the freedom of choice that we have.  Sartre was considered to be similar to the “Platonists” in the sense of subjectivity. The particular example being in the concepts of good and evil, where man can never choose evil as w always choose the good.
