Abstract

Child development is the concern of every parent and individual in society. However, little id known of the progress of development during the formative years. It is not possible to the test the influence of environmental factors at such an early age. Thus, most researchers rely on assumption and postulations when calibrating the influence of the early days in the cognitive ability of an individual.

Introduction

Mathematical ability ranks as one of the most innate and crucial characteristics in the development of child (Saracho & Spodek, 2008). Development in all spheres is dependent on the environment in which the child develops during the formative years. Theoretically, differences in achievement s in mathematical competence emanates from classroom and home input during the formative years. The influence of these two aspects is of utmost importance in calibrating the impact of social environment in the development of mathematical ability. However, by placing emphasis on the age at which mathematical abilities first appear in a child’s life.

Guidance is necessary for development of mathematical abilities to some extend. As a result, a four-year-old only requires knowledge in mathematics that occurs naturally, while for a graduate form college, his experiences have shaped his abilities a great deal. As posited by Newman & Newman (2008), the assessment of mathematical abilities of a four year as a measure of cognitive development is seldom related to the social status of the individuals well as the environment of development. This is due to the fact most children of that are exposed to similar circumstances. Cognitive development on the other hand is based on changes under the influence of the environment in which a child develops. The impact of the environment can only be felt after duration (Meggitt, 2006).

The characteristics of scaffolding are bound to differ among individuals. However, the difference is more pronounced among grownups than children are. This is observable from the e influence of environment on an individual.

According to Winegar & Valsiner (1992), the influence of educational facilities is seldom significant. An individual graduating from college has received education and passed through numerous stages that differentiate them from other college graduates. Thus, the support offered in the form of scaffolding has a major influence on the cognitive development of an individual since environments will differ according to the time of exposure.

Conclusion

The environmental factors play a decisive role in the development of cognitive capabilities of a child. As observed from numerous instances, children from socially stable backgrounds are exposed to good education in addition to availability of objects that stimulate growth and development.
