Schizophrenia: Complex Brain Disorder, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 321

Essay

Schizophrenia is one of the most commonly misunderstood disorders, as there is no known single cause. While the exact tenants of the disorder remain a mystery it is commonly referred to as a biochemical disorder. This is assumed to be because of a genetic predisposition, which is passed down through family generations. It is believed that Dopamine, one of the brains neurotransmitters, is created in larger than normal amounts, which lead to the disorder (DeBeaurepaire, Honig & MacQueen, 2012). The increase of dopamine is said to be inherited, through genetics. Along with the excess of dopamine, it is also believed that life stress can also increase the disorder as well as accompanying symptoms. If an individual was raised in a home with parents who suffered from mental disorders it could facilitate an unhealthy lifestyle. An unstable home can lead to violence or abuse, which causes great stress, which in turn perpetuates cognitive disorders. This turmoil can create additional difficulty with psychotic symptoms as well as life general life disturbances, which is especially difficult for those suffering with increased neurotransmitters.

The most commonly prescribed treatment for Schizophrenia is a combination of psychotherapy, antidepressants, and antipsychotics. Because it is often associated with depression, anxiety and mood disorders, the treatment must address each. The medications are meant to control symptoms, as well as decrease deterioration of brain structures or functioning. With the medication, counseling is commonly prescribed to assist the individual in understanding how their disorder affects their daily life, behavior and even feelings. Therapy is also aimed at assisting the individual in dealing with anxiety, depression, potential abuse issues and even better controlling hallucinations or delusional thinking. Counseling is meant to help the individual take care of themselves, stay on their medication and find a routine that facilitates improved health as well as controlled symptoms.
