There are many different densities in liquid. For example, oil and water do not mix. Oil will float on top of the water because it is a lighter density. When a liquid floats it is less dense or lighter, and a liquid that sinks is more dense or heavier.
Instructional/Learning Activities
Instructional Strategy (or Strategies):
This will be a partner project. Each team will be composed of two students. I will walk around to each station verifying the group is completely the experiment correctly and to assist if necessary.
Explanation and Rationale for Instructional Strategy:
- I will ask the class if we take two cups of liquid, can they be mixed together. Then I will ask are all liquids the same? I will remind them to think of different types of liquids such as oil, water, and dish soap. Once we have discussed the possibilities, we will proceed to the experiment.
- I will give each team four different liquids, food coloring, plastic cups, a stir stick, and a worksheet to record individual results. The four liquids will be water, corn syrup, vegetable oil, and shampoo. I will have the students put a drop of red food coloring in the water, orange in the corn syrup, green in the shampoo, and a drop of blue in the vegetable oil. Then each student will mix the liquids to see what happens.
- After they mix the liquids, I will have them draw the details out on the worksheet. Each liquid when left undisrupted will the colors mix or not. Then I would instruct the students to fill out the type of liquid associate by their color on their worksheet as well.
- The students will fill out the worksheet explaining what happened with each liquid. Which one was heavier, and which one floated to the top and if they mixed naturally.
- Next the students will be instructed to mix the liquids in the cup.
- I will then have the students explain what happened to the liquids when they stirred.
- In five minutes they will go back to the cups and record what happened to the liquid after it had sat undisturbed again.

Explanation and Rationale for Learning Activity:
The students will learn the importance of liquid density. This is an important step in Science education because it paves the way for understanding that density is not about weight, it is mass per volume. Because this is such a complicated concept to understand, this experiment will allow the children to see how different liquid densities react with each other. Which one is heavier in density, and which one is lighter? By changing the liquids up, they will be able to learn that there are many different densities in liquid, not just one or two. Most likely they will not understand the complexities associated with density, but this will allow them to begin to see some of the differences.
