Effective Communication Skills

Rationale and Support:  Having worked in the nursing field for over a decade, I have learned that having effective communication skills are essential. Working with mental health patients, there is a need for ongoing communication between nurses, and other medical staff on the assessments of the patient. Learning effective communication skills are fundamental in communicating with colleagues, but also with patients, their families, and many others. According to Kourkouta and Papathanasiou,

“Nursing as a health care science, focuses on serving the needs of human as a biopsychosocial and spiritual being. Its practice requires not only scientific knowledge, but also interpersonal, intellectual and technical abilities and skills.” (Koukouta, Papathansiou, 2014, p.66)

For this essential purpose, I created the learning resource, “Effective Communication Skills.” In fulfilling the NONPF Core Competency #1 Scientific Foundations, I have followed the leadership path in creating resources and information in how to be more effective in our duties. In doing this, have also fulfilled the NONPF Core Competency Indicator #3 Translates reach and other forms of knowledge to improve practice processes and outcomes.

Within the duties and responsibilities that I perform throughout the day is the ability to carry out the specific procedures and processes that combined taking a holistic approach and Christian-like approach in communicating directly and honestly. Especially for other nurses, effective communication means incorporating standard critical content in which help to provide details about the patient’s history to the received, and synthesizing information. In addition, the presentation presented to the other nursing personnel is develop standardized forms, checklists, and other tools that help create successful hand offs. When dealing with patients it is also fundamental to have effective communication skills, which helps to fulfil DSGNE Program Outcome #2 Utilize criticize inquiry to advance the discipline and profession of nursing. This is also supported by Wright, “: respecting confidentiality; sharing, in a way they can understand, information people want or need to know about their health; accurate record keeping, reinforce the fact that effective spoken and written skills are essential to the toolkit of the responsible nurse and therefore should be integral to any course in this field.” (Wright, 2012 pg.1)

Within my work setting, nurses as leaders must allow display leadership qualities, in allowing other medical personnel the opportunity to ask questions, while also allowing to scrutinizes or exchange contact information in case of a needed follow-up. (Seifert, 2012, p. 478) Helping to facilitate these concepts and skills to different medical staff is implementing the needed skills in which fulfil the PYC Specialty Program Outcome #2 Utilize evidenced-based approach to initiate change and improve primary care practice lifespan. This is also performed when enforcing the effective communication skills of reinforcing quality and measurement, while making sure that there is compliance with the use of standardized forms. In exercising these core competency skills, I have also facilitated the AACN Essential #IX: Master’s-Level Nursing Practice. This is implemented throughout my daily routines, and creation of resourceful educational materials used in helping to teach others are pertinent skills necessary in the profession. In exercising these skills and competencies is by following the AACN Essential #5, Use leadership skills to teach, coach, and mentor other members of the healthcare team. Not only has been my duty to teach, coach, and mentor members, but also reiterate as a leader, it is their job also to educate and coach staff about correct handoff procedures, and other necessary organizational priorities that will help to advance the profession.

Reflection:

In reflecting on how this exhibit is essential to the path that I was called on, is facilitated in the way in which I am able to be a leader to my team members. My essential duties in working with mental health patients involves completing self-assessments forms, Nursing Assessments, and integrating the required information into a feasible nursing plan of care. Effective communication skills when dealing with challenge patients is crucial to the patient receiving the right treatment. I learned also personally that effective communication also mainly revolves around the safety of patients, as nurses must stress the importance and consequences of effective communication skills. In facilitating a master-nurse level practice, I have integrated the key concepts of communication skills in linking interprofessional practice, organization and systems, patient safety, and quality improvement. In order to be good at my job, with 10 years’ experience working with sometimes challenging individuals, nurses must study interpersonal relations and communication through obtaining additional training and education. This educational presentation was provided as a learning guide that helps to use throughout the practice. This exhibit was chosen, because it is essential in teaching others about the importance of standards, measurements, and skills necessary in being a change within the practice
