Selecting a Major and a Career, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 276

Essay

Choosing a career can be very hectic for one must consider a career he she desires to work at along with the economical benefits that can achieve a certain lifestyle for his/her family. With that consideration comes the concept of supply and demand for the career choice you decide on. Obviously occupations that are high in demand will yield the highest pay rates. One must estimate the need for his/her occupation into the future in order to reasonably estimate their salary well into the future. Competition will always drive salaries down. It would be safe to say that occupations requiring extensive education and licensing are always in demand because many people will not dedicate themselves to such years of education to achieve such licensing. I speak of occupations such as dentistry and medical doctors in particular.

One can find other ways to make a lot of money with an average education such as a Bachelor’s degree by working really hard, working long hours, giving up some vacation time and learning skills that other employee’s simply do not possess. You must make yourself stand out alone from the crowd. You should decide what occupation most attracts you and why, what do you hope to gain from your occupation, how much time are you willing to devote to your occupation and do you possess the skills necessary to achieve these goals? “The last question you should ask yourself is if these skills are currently in high demand and will be in demand in the near future when you expect to be in the work force?” (Madariagas, B. 11).
