Self-Concept in a Bag, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 283

Essay

According to the textbook, our self-concept is how we perceive ourselves. While other individuals may not agree with our self-perception, self-concept is how we believe others see us. Various traits that an individual could use to classify themselves include decisions as to whether they are introverts or extroverts, attractive or plain, happy or sad, among others. Ultimately, when people are made aware of an individual’s self-concept, they are more likely to understand that individual (Verderber, 2010).

The three items I selected to represent my self-concept include my combat duty boots to represent my past self-concept, my gym membership card to represent my current self-concept, and my Playstation 4 controller to represent my future self-concept. I selected my combat duty boots to represent my past self-concept because I believe they represent both pride for the time I served and pride for my country. While I am still proud to have been a member of the army, my past self was more capable of enacting this pride than my current self. Although I am no longer in the army, I still consider myself to be strong, healthy, and active. Therefore, I brought my gym membership card to represent my current self-concept. I use it faithfully, sometimes five days a week. Lastly, my Playstation 4 controller represents my future self-concept because although I enjoy playing video games now and always have, current me doesn’t have the time required to constantly partake in this activity. As a consequence, my future self-concept will be that of a relaxed, fun-loving individual. My future self will continue to be family oriented, as my wife and children can be involved in the games I play.
