Required Materials:

Computer projection for blown up poem and camera for pictures of poem.

  • Construction paper and finger paint for student pictures and tape recorder for student responses.

Keep a Poem in Your Pocket
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you’ll never feel lonely
At night when you’re in bed.

The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you’re in bed.

Day 1: Literal Language

  • Activities#1, listen for rhyming words, #2, act out vocabulary words in orange.
  • Focus for Listening—Head—Bed—Bring—Sing—Making Connections: “As you hear the poem, think about how your ‘head’ ends up in ‘bed,’ and how a poem can ‘bring’ dreams.
  • Lesson To illustrate “dozen,” groups of twelve will be configured. The odd numbered students will configure in individual isolation in another room, and think about how they feel as their classmates sing and dance without them. Responses will be taped and recorded for play back.
  • Follow-up—Chant and stomp twelve-beat theme incorporating “Head, Bed, Bring, Song.”      

Day 2: Figurative Language

  • Activities#1, act out thoughts in head, #2, create dance steps per child’s story.      
  • Focus for Listeningidea of “saving/storing.” Inferencing: “As I read, think about why a little girl or little boy might want to save, put away, or ‘hide’ a poem.”        
  • LessonTo illustrate preserving happy thoughts, students will draw pictures they describe as happy, and stash inside their pocket. To illustrate imagination, each will be asked to ‘store’ what they drew inside their mind. Lastly, students will be asked to describe how they feel when their parents make them lay in bed, even though they say “I am not sleepy.” Have students record their responses into tape recorder, and listen back.
  • Follow-upPictures of each student’s ‘happy thoughts’ will be incorporated into class collogue.
