Introduction
Shell is a large company with a global presence throughout the world. The firm encompasses many different focus areas that include oil and gas drilling, refining oil to make new products, the production of biofuels and petrochemicals, as well as sales and distribution (Shell, 2014). The company represents a variety of core values and beliefs that impact its employees and the customers that are served. The organization is complex and multifaceted on many levels; therefore, they must demonstrate sound and reasonable human resources policies that impact employees in a positive manner. The firm requires a unique human resources strategy that is on a global scale because it possesses many interests throughout the world that require a comprehensive focus on high quality training and education to ensure that employees are recruited from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels to meet organizational needs across divisions (Shell, 2014).
Analysis
The organization is structured globally through its business divisions, including Upstream International, Upstream Americas, Downstream, Projects and Technology, and Segmental Reporting, all of which must operate cohesively in order to accomplish the desired goals and objectives of the firm on a continuous basis (Shell, 2014). Shell currently employs approximately 92,000 people in 70 countries and expands its scope through the hiring of new employees with diverse skill sets, some of whom include new graduates and others with prior experience (Shell, 2014). The business aims to provide its employees with the ability to effectively communicate regarding issues of importance, including team meetings, emails, webcasts, and in-person relationships (Shell, 2014). Furthermore, the Shell People Survey represents employee engagement and loyalty to Shell, and in 2013, 80 percent of employees demonstrated a favorable score regarding the business (Shell, 2014). This supports the belief that Shell provides its employees with the groundwork for success and greater achievement through its activities, as well as a means of creating an environment for change that enables employees to report breaches of the Shell General Business Principles and Code of Conduct without consequences (Shell, 2014). This strategy enables employees to have a safe and friendly environment to promote change and to achieve their desired objectives with the company on a regular basis (Shell, 2014).
Shell also supports widespread diversity through its employee infrastructure, including women in 17.2 percent of senior leadership positions, 9 percent as directors, and 29 percent of all employees (Shell, 2014). The organization also provides its employees with share plans to improve their own performance by meeting specified performance indicators, as well as restricted share plans for senior-level managers, global employee share purchase plans for discounted shares, and specific programs designed for employees in the United Kingdom (Shell, 2014). Each of these strategies supports the ability of employees to actively contribute to Shell’s mission and vision through their contributions, offering their knowledge and expertise in different ways to accomplish the objectives of the firm (Shell, 2014).
Conclusion
Shell is largely successful as a global organization not only because of the products that it produces, but also because of its employees. Its human resources strategy focuses on the recruitment of employees with high levels of skills, education, and experience, and rewards its employees for a job well done. The organization also provides avenues for employees to provide feedback and to expand their contributions to the firm through their performance and professional growth within the organization to make a difference and to actively contribute to achieving the organizational mission and vision through their activities.
