Short-Term Effects of Breastfeeding, Essay Example

Pages: 4

Words: 1101

Essay

Three main points of the study: The primary points of the study are as follows: 1) to determine if breastfeeding has an impact on respiratory infections and diarrhea during the childhood years; 2) to determine mortality rates of children under the age of five who have been breastfed versus those who have not; and 3) to determine if breastfeeding has an impact on the number of respiratory infections that are observed in these children (Horta & Victora, 2013).

Do you agree or disagree with authors view and/or outcomes? Why or why not? This study is classified as a systematic review and meta-analysis and determined that breastfeeding has a protective level of impact on children under the age of five years, thereby preventing them from higher hospitalization and mortality rates due to diarrhea and respiratory infections (Horta & Victora, 2013). This review demonstrates that breastfeeding has a positive and meaningful impact on young children and their ability to fight illnesses and infections that could contribute to higher mortality rates (Horta & Victora, 2013).

Who within your professional work arena are you going to recommend this study to and why?  I would recommend this study to a future Nurse Educator because it offers basic yet relevant information regarding the role of breastfeeding in improving the immune response to disease and in fighting potential infections that could have a detrimental impact on quality of life and on overall health and wellbeing for young children.

Other comments: This study supports the development of new perspectives to further support breastfeeding as a common practice for mothers in order to protect their children from unnecessary risk or harm.

Breastfeeding and reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome: a meta-analysis

Three main points of the study: The primary points of the study are as follows: 1) To determine if breastfeeding has any type of impact on the risk of sudden infant death syndrome; 2) to evaluate SIDS risk against breastfeeding utilization; and 3) to utilize a meta-analysis protocol using preset criteria (Hauck et.al, 2011).

Do you agree or disagree with authors view and/or outcomes? Why or why not?

The authors demonstrate via meta-analysis that breastfeeding children is a useful tool in the prevention of SIDS and demonstrates the importance of combining this behavior with other opportunities to improve prevention rates at the necessary level to achieve effective outcomes for young children. This perspective is relevant because it captures the importance of breastfeeding as a viable measure and an opportunity to improve the immune response and the overall health of young children.

Who within your professional work arena are you going to recommend this study to and why?  I would recommend this study to a future Nurse Educator to support the knowledge base and to encourage the expansion of support for breastfeeding as related to SIDS.

Other comments: This study demonstrates the importance of breastfeeding and its multiple benefits and how this has a lasting impact on the quality of life and health risks for young children.

Support for healthy breastfeeding mothers with healthy term babies

Three main points of the study: The primary points of the study are as follows: 1) to determine the level of effectiveness that is associated with breastfeeding techniques for mothers; 2) To evaluate the level of care that is received by breastfeeding mothers in the maternity ward; and 3) to evaluate statistics regarding breastfeeding as related to common recommendations (Renfrew et.al, 2014).

Do you agree or disagree with authors view and/or outcomes? Why or why not? The authors utilized the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group’s Trials Register in order to identify the level of support that mothers receive while breastfeeding, and it was determined that additional support for mothers provides important insight and outcomes for mothers, particularly those who may struggle with breastfeeding (Renfrew et.al, 2014). This will encourage mothers to take the steps forward that are necessary to improve their breastfeeding skills and the frequency of this practice in order to accomplish the intended objectives.

Who within your professional work arena are you going to recommend this study to and why?  I would recommend this study to a future Nurse Educator because it provides additional insight regarding the ability to support new objectives and to demonstrate the value of understanding how breastfeeding impacts children in a positive manner that will benefit their wellbeing.

Other comments: This study provides additional support for the development of new strategies to support mothers who are breastfeeding in order to improve outcomes for children and to enable mothers to provide their children with this benefit on a consistent basis.

Breastfeeding, brain activation to own infant cry, and maternal sensitivity

Three main points of the study: The primary points of the study are as follows: 1) To understand how breastfeeding contributes to improving social-emotional connections and close mother-infant contact; 2) to understand the neurobiological processes associated with this practice; and 3) To address the role of maternal sensitivity and maternal brain response as related to breastfeeding (Kim et.al, 2012).

Do you agree or disagree with authors view and/or outcomes? Why or why not?

This study provides additional information regarding the role of breastfeeding and how it impacts the maternal response, using neurological mechanisms as a basis for evaluation. It is important to identify the challenges associated with the neurobiological response to breastfeeding in order to improve the understanding of this mechanism and how it enables both mothers and their children to benefit at the same time.

Who within your professional work arena are you going to recommend this study to and why?  This study would be recommended to a future nurse educator because it offers an examination of the different constructs of breastfeeding that impact both mother and child and how these also influence outcomes and the neurological mechanisms that take place with this practice.

Other comments: This study is important because it captures an understanding of a topic that is not necessarily considered as closely as other areas, thereby enabling a more complex and multifaceted understanding of breastfeeding.
