Shortage of Teachers, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 370

Essay

The problem is the shortage of teachers and it is a problem because the future of many school going children who are the citizens of tomorrow is at stake. Unless there are qualified teachers to teach in the schools, the students would be unable to get a proper education which would harm their future prospects in terms of getting jobs and receiving an education. Hence, the students are harmed by the shortage of teachers.

The important causes of the problem of shortage of teachers are to do with the career being not as lucrative when compared with other professions and hence, less number of professionals apply for teacher positions. The authorities governing the educational boards are to blame for the problem as they need to take proactive steps to address the problem. They have failed to market the teaching profession as a good career choice and hence they need to act now to remedy the situation.

The way to address the problem of shortage of teachers is to make the pay competitive and attractive relative to the other professions and also by marketing the profession as a challenging one given that the teachers deal with young children who would be the future citizens of the country and hence torchbearers of progress. The other solutions that can be proposed would include lowering the standards for recruitment so that more teachers can be recruited. However, it is my opinion that this would not help the situation and my idea of making the profession appealing is a better one in the longer term.

The possible costs of drawbacks of my solution is that this would entail substantial costs on the school boards as they have to spend more on paying the teachers well. Further, there is always the possibility of qualified candidates opting for other careers despite our aggressive marketing because of the way in which they have been conditioned to treat the teaching profession.

The objections might come from the other members of the school boards as my proposal would entail budgetary expenditure to be earmarked for this purpose. These members might object to my answers to the preceding questions and as mentioned above, their objections might be about the cost and feasibility of my proposal.
