Should Disobedient Youths Be Suspended From School? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 249

Essay

Excluding juveniles from school does not appear to positively influence their behaviors. Therefore, instead of suspending disobedient youths from school, it is beneficial to provide them with in-school detentions so they are still required to complete their work and participate in activities that are more likely to help them correct their behaviors. Cognitive and affective school-based intervention programs can be used in a manner that helps correct some of these behaviors. Participating in delinquent behavior at an early age is a sign that a student may display this behavior as an adult. Thus, schools can effectively counteract this behavior by using cognitive intervention, which includes educating the delinquent student about the dangers of drug use and delinquency. Affective programs can also be used to help students break free from antisocial behavior. Schools can also promote behavioral, environmental, and therapeutic programs for individuals to resist negative behaviors. Behavioral interventions help students learn to resist peer pressure, environmental programs help juveniles understand that they are being monitored to deter criminal behavior, and therapeutic programs provide counseling to individuals that have already exhibited detrimental behavior to provide them with the help they need. Overall, school is a place that can help provide juveniles with the help they need to stay on the right track due to the variety of programs offered to them. Thus, it is detrimental to suspend a child for misbehavior because they are more likely to repeat it with this type of punishment. Instead, rehabilitation should be the goal.
