Should Women Be Allowed to Play Sports Against Men? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 327

Essay

It is common knowledge that, women are weaker in terms of physical strength as compared to men. I argue from the perspective that I agree women must be allowed to play sports against men. My standpoint is based on the fact that, a situation where women are allowed to play sports against men leads to a limited number of women emerging victorious in certain categories of sports such as Athletics and weightlifting even after introduction of varied divisions based on factors such as weight and height. The women who would be willing to embrace such challenges would only be motivated by better pay and prestige that is associated with such tournaments.

I also posit that, in majority of the disciplines, the physical predisposition is not necessarily the critical success factor. Therefore, in most sports that women perform poorly as compared to men, environmental factors, lack of encouragement and promotion play a key role. Consequently, it is prudent to assert that, suspension of gender segregation will culminate to male domination of particular sports in a similar manner to the black as well as the white sportspeople. In this regard, black athletes dominate in running while the whites dominate in swimming.

It is therefore prudent to eliminate physical difference in sports but all people regardless of gender should be accorded equal opportunities to prove their potentials in all types of Paralympics games. It is only fair that equal opportunities are created for all people instead of aiming at equal performance. Determination of equal opportunities considering payment and popularity should therefore disregard the issue of gender segregation.

In conclusion, since it is not practical to assess the biological advantage that men have over women in a particular sport, I therefore suggest that, segregation is not the best option in this regard. I also postulate that, a biological advantage can only be assumed but not proven. Therefore, women must be allowed to play sports against men and their individual capability be judged on performance.
