Significance of 1896 US Elections, Essay Example

The US presidential elections held on November 3^rd, 1896 saw the Democrat William J. Bryan defeated by the Republican William McKinley. There was significant paradigm shift in the countries political, economic and social institutions. Of much historical significance is the ascent of the United States to the status of a world colonial power. Moreover, the U.S. placed its money officially on the gold standard. These accomplishments signified a turning point for the history of U.S. politics and one to appreciate this fact, a brief highlight of events occurring then is necessary[1].

This election highlighted the changes that were occurring in American society.  The old third party rule was replaced by a four party system. The coalition headed by McKinley represented businessmen, professionals, skilled factory workers, and prosperous farmers. The Populist Party which was defeated was headed by Bryan who represented the democrats, the silver republicans and the rural population[2]. There was a considerable division between rural and urban interests, and the republican victory highlighted the shift of American society from agrarian nation to one of urban interests.

This election placed paramount importance on Economic issues such as gold standard, bimetallism, tariffs and free silver. Many modern campaign techniques were pioneered by the Republican campaign manager, Mark Hanna. The Democratic Party had disowned the Bourbon Democrats, a mistake through which the Republican was able to capitalize on through reinstating their grip on white house for 36 years.

McKinley’s approach was a success in that his policies regarding the gold standard, industrial growth and pluralism determined national policies until the year 1913. The term in which McKinley was in office saw America increased involvement in international affairs. The bone of contention in this election was whether the American currency should be backed by Gold or silver.

The introduction of the gold standard was a major step forward for the American economy. Its inception saw America debut into the world stage as a colonial superpower. The foregoing underpins the historical turning point of the American politics.
