Significant Experience That You Have Overcome, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 355

Essay

I believe in life it is important to learn from challenges and use those events to be a stronger person overall. Although my SAT scores were not superior and English is not my first language, my grades in school have been consistently above average and this really says something about a person. It shows a person who can rise to challenges and meet deadlines dealing with whatever outside pressures may be affecting him.

The beginning of my life was quite traumatic as my father was killed before I was born during the war in Liberia. She raised me as a single parent and sent me to school at the age of five, with the help of the UNHCR. Because of the UNHCR, I was able to learn things I would not have learned otherwise and I thank them for that generosity.

After middle school, the only help from the UNHCR was for things such as medication and health supplies, so school was an issue in my family. My mother struggled and we worked through the crisis until the American government approved us to come to America in 2005. This was one of the best days of my life.

After arriving in America, I began school and my family worked hard as did I in order to make enough money for food and shelter. My grades were good and, although English is not my first language, I feel I have mastered it well enough to be fluent in the area. America has truly helped my family and I would love to have the opportunity to give back to this great country who gave us so much in a time when we had nothing.

As for what I can contribute to Princeton, I can give the college a student who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve the best marks possible and succeed as a superior student. Due to my life and experiences, I feel I have been working throughout life with struggles and this has only made me stronger. I feel I can use this as a benefit to help succeed at Princeton and be a model student.
