Situational Factors, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 293

Essay

It is important for law enforcement officials to pay attention to situational factors because these characteristics can occasionally contribute to an increased severity of the situation. We certainly live in a demanding and rude culture, which is demonstrated by the fact that each individual believes the world is centered around them. As a consequence, many people respond to potential threats to their well-being in a disrespectful manner, even if it is they who are at fault. When a police officer questions civilians, compliance is generally expected. However, if these individuals respond with an attitude, the scenario can devolve into a potentially threatening situation. If this occurs, it is important for police officers to take action to defend themselves and ensure that they get the information they are seeking. Considering situational factors in this case is necessary because a poor attitude shows that the situation is at risk for becoming violent, allowing the officer to be prepared.

The perceived willingness of the parents to assist in solving the problem is also an important concern. Society expects that most parents care for their children and would be willing to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure that they receive the care they deserve. However, if parents are not willing to participate in the resolution of a crisis in which the child is related, these individuals can be seen as potential abusers of the child. It is important for police officers to use their discretion in this situation because their actions can allow a child to achieve safety. Thus, it is acceptable for situational factors to influence the decisions made by police officers because doing so helps ensure that the proper decision is made to help defend civilians and allows them to carry out their job duties responsibly.
