Introduction
Making the decision regarding who to save versus who to let go in the event of a nuclear war and the use of a fall-out shelter is very difficult and requires an examination of the individuals who are available and how they might best contribute to the circumstances, along with who might be most compassionate to all persons, given the situation. Those who are selected to rebuild a new society must serve as strong examples of humanity and must be able to provide a level of stability and an active contribution that will support the new society as it moves forward. This is a complex set of circumstances that requires further consideration and an understanding of the characteristics that will be most useful within the new society, as well as the selection of individuals who are likely to get along with each other and to form a society with a long-term future.
Analysis
In this scenario, the following individuals would be chosen to build the new society: 1) The army drill instructor, as he or she possesses significant knowledge and experience that would promote order and organization within the new society, as well as an authoritative and leadership presence for the new society; 2) The third-year medical student, as he or she possesses a sufficient amount of training to be effective in providing healthcare services for the new society, and also possesses a level of diversity that is necessary with respect to his or her homosexual status; 3) A 16 year-old pregnant female, as she possesses a young mind and a different perspective and will be able to bring a child into the world for the next generation when she gives birth; 4) A 22 year-old Army nurse and midwife, because she possesses a level of leadership and authority from her Army experiences, along with nursing experience and the ability to deliver the child of the 16 year-old when she is ready to give birth; 5) the 38 year-old “fix it” male because he possesses invaluable skills that will be effective in designing, constructing, and building the new society with the materials that are available; and 6) the 15 year-old male with the first-year apprentice carpenter experience, as he will also be able to contribute to the construction and development of the new society from the ground up.
Each of these individuals was selected because they will provide a unique yet valuable contribution to the new society as it forms, and it is anticipated that they will not be bound by racism or homophobia that could impact their activities in the future. It is believed that these choices will provide the society with a strong framework for success and the ability to form a new society through open communication and activities that are directed at the betterment of all of its chosen members. This process will also provide a basis for examining new directions that will support the new societal endeavor and have a lasting impact on the society for the foreseeable future.
Conclusion
The decision of who to keep and who to let go in the event of this type of circumstance is extremely difficult; therefore, it requires a high level understanding and acceptance of the different influences that will have an impact on patients and that will provide a basis for exploring the best possible methods of moving the new society forward with the resources that are available. These selections represent a well-rounded approach to forming the new society with the intent to construct from the ground up, using technical and organizational knowledge to frame these objectives. With the impending birth of a child within this group, it will be possible to expand the next generation and to recognize the importance of moving the society forward for the future. This group is likely to achieve success in forming its new society and should be evaluated as such.
