Essay

Define the six task-related steps that help managers build effective work teams.

Six task-related steps that help managers build effective work teams include competence, charter, control, collaboration, communication, and creative innovation. Several factors comprise competence and to measure them, it is essential to first define whether all employees are appropriately contributing to the team. If they are not, it is essential to consider why. In many cases, individuals fail to participate because they do not have the adequate competence in order to be a beneficial member of a team. To alleviate this, it is necessary to define where these competencies are lacking and determine how to fill these gaps. In many cases, other employees can be partnered to build these competencies.

The second task-related step that is necessary to build an effective work team is charter. Charter defines individual responsibilities within a project and allows the team to recognize their independent missions in terms of how it will enhance completion of the full project. Although employee goals will be generally stated to them, it is important that they are able to develop sub-goals and determine how these interact with other project aims being completed by other members of the group. In order to emphasize these aims, it is important to emphasize communication and collaboration, which are additional necessary task-related steps.

Collaboration and communication are tasks that are tied together conceptually because they ask whether all team members understand the priority of their tasks in addition to feedback that is needed to enhance all of the individual portions of the full project. Once team members are able to communicate honestly and provide helpful feedback, the project will begin to come together. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that collaboration and communication are occurring throughout all phases of the project. If these tasks are lacking, then it is essential to provide workshops on how to emphasize these skills when pursuing project completion.

Control is an essential task-related step because it allows employees to feel freedom and empowerment over the section work that is theirs. It is necessary to create an adequate balance between what essential steps of the project are and the freedom that the employee should be given to make the project his or her own. Ultimately, freedom to make decisions contributes to a more innovative result, while constraint allows specific criteria to be met. It is therefore important to ensure that employees understand their boundaries, but are also able to make recommendations and implement their plan.

The last task-related step is creative innovation, which directly reflects the employees’ ability to apply their knowledge to the creation and implementation of their projects, which can potentially enhance the company’s mindset as a whole. Groups, rather than individuals are essential for the success of an organization and it is therefore necessary to enhance teamwork rather than to suppress it. Effective work teams are those who are able to build upon one another’s ideas in a constructive manner. Ultimately, teams should be designed in a manner in which participants have many different ideas that are reflected in discussion, but are able to form one novel idea that is superior to the rest as a combination of everyone’s input. If creative innovation is lacking, it is possible for the organization to enhance this characteristic by providing training, education, and access to books or films that may spark new ideas for discussion.
