Slacktivism, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 281

Essay

According to Pfeifle, slacktivism is the tendency of people to make comments and give likes on all issues found on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. In his view, the use of social media to discuss issues such as politics among other things has helped to reduce on cost, while making it difficult to suppress some of undesirable opinions. Critically, Pfeifle perspective on slacktivism cannot be disputed because social media has sparked social activism globally.
According to Seay, advocacy groups and activists have formed a tendency of using social media platforms to campaign for their causes. Arguably, he shares the same school of thought as that of Pfeifle that social media platforms are inexpensive. He observes that slacktivists reap big from their causes because contributions made from their contributions end up in their pockets. Critically, the assumption made by slacktivists is somehow misleading because the likes and comments on some issues do not necessarily transform into monetary gains.

I agree with Seay in regard to slacktivism that some proceeds end up in pockets of slacktivists because there is no sense of accountability. Most slacktivists do not commit fully to their cause, and while they might spend time on the Internet, the struggle does not always pay. I agree with Seay when he says that slacktivists tend to ascribe to the idea that, the more popular a post gets, the higher the chance of receiving a boost from policy makers. However, getting popular on a certain cause on the social media streets is one sure way of attracting not only funding, but also causing awareness. In some cases, an issue can go a long way in catching the attention of legislators.
