Identification of topic and Statement of purpose (including health stats/facts re: importance of health issue for children
The selected topic for this research pertains to sleep hygiene in children and adolescents.Sleep hygiene is a concept relating regulation of sleep patterns. It is practiced among any age group for this discussion it is focused on children and adolescents. Its main purpose is improving quality of sleep, among the target group. In 1970 this theory was designed as a strategy to treat mild to moderate insomnia (Cho, Kim & Lee, 2013).
However, by 2014 clinicians discovered that sleep hygiene procedureswere limited in many elements and began improving upon techniques needed to enhance the sleep process. As such, sleep hygiene assessments were extended to person affected by depression, insomnia and various forms of psychological disorders. Since then recommendations have catered towards development of regular sleep patterns and applying sleep naps carefully. The suggested nap pattern is regulated away from regular bedtime apart from providing a worry free environment for the child or adolescent (Cho et.al. 2013).
Sleep hygiene is very important for children and adolescents. It is highly recommended that parents begin practicing sleep hygiene very early during infancy. Some children have a natural healthy sleep pattern, but others have to be trained and it is very difficult for some parents. Clinicians have come to recognize that while sleep patterns are relevant children are peculiar individuals and these patterns may vary. As such, a pattern, which may be suitable for one child’s growth and development may hinder another child (Cho et.al. 2013).
