While many people think that etiquette and protocol is obsolete in the 21th century and should no longer be followed, this is untrue. There is certainly a proper way that individuals are supposed to conduct themselves, and although this no longer requires knowing which spoon and fork to use at dinner, this does mean behaving respectfully towards others depending upon the situation (Martin, 1979). Social protocol has clearly changed in modern times, but that does not mean that it no longer exists.

The main difference between modern etiquette and protocol and that of the past is that there are different ways to conduct proper behavior with different individuals depending upon their status. When a person interacts with his or her close friends, it is okay to dress down and speak freely to some extent. However, it would be polite of the speaker to avoid touchy subjects with these people to avoid conflict or in a manner that is sensitive of their feelings. Furthermore, if one has a friend that is sensitive to jokes about his or her appearance or other attributes, this should be avoided in conversation.

A second example of how people could apply etiquette and protocol in the modern world is behavior in the workplace or at a job interview. Even if you’re friendly with your boss or interviewer, it is appropriate to be polite at all times. This extends to dressing well and extending pleasantries to the other employees, regardless of your familiarity or fondness towards them (Mitchell, 1999). In addition, dating another employee is generally considered inappropriate and should be avoided, as should flirting with members of the opposite sex in the office.

Social protocol and etiquette has clearly evolved over time and many individuals have gone so far as to abandon its practice. However, it is important to remember that different places and situations call for different behaviors and individuals who wish to become successful will learn how to adapt to these different climates.
