Social History, Essay Example

Words: 599

Essay

Overall, my medical history is fairly sparse when compared to other. Besides attending bi-annual physicals at the doctor office, I have only had one major clinical operation in my life: a tonsillectomy when I was seven years old. I have also maintained robust psychological health over the span of my life- I am usually able to deal with difficult feelings and anxiety well in my life. Regarding the environment I was raised in, I grew up in a predominantly working-class, lower-middle class neighborhood. The neighborhood was quite diverse: In addition to Hispanic-Americans and African Americans, there were also a number of Asian immigrants who lived in the immediate area around us.  While the neighborhood was generally peaceful, there were a number of “rough neighborhoods” located around the perimeter where theft and drug use was common. The overall social environment was healthy and conductive to growing up in a nurturing environment.

In the future, I plan a career in the health care industry where I will be directly dealing with individuals that need help and assistance- particularly in the areas. I enjoy this type of work, and hope to play a key role in helping people rehabilitate and recover to their normal selves. I hope not only to learn elements directly related to therapy, but also to learn administrative skills in a home environment.

My daily routine is typically composed of school and work from 9-6 p.m.  Because I am involved in both activities on a regular basis, my schedule may vary on a day-to-day basis. After finishing up my work and school, I usually finish remaining home work, and then either watch television or go online for roughly one to two hours.  I usually sleep from 6-8 hours per day, depending on my schedule and ability to fall asleep. During the weekend, I usually meet with friends Saturday morning/ afternoon for breakfast or lunch, and then go the gym in the afternoon. I typically see a movie or have some other type of social activity on Saturday night.  On Sundays, my main activity is primarily rest: After attending church in the morning and having lunch with church friends in the afternoon. I usually spend the afternoon and evening time with a number of hobbies. Due to the current demanding nature of my schedule, I do not have extensive time for hobbies.  However, I do have a number of hobbies that keep me busy: reading, writing, and occasionally going to movies or to sports events.  These activities are usually chosen randomly or at the last second; that is, I do not specifically make time for these activities in my schedule- I roughly spend 10-15 hours per week on the previously mentioned leisure activities.  I also enjoy being around people which is a key deciding factor in how I will choose to spend my free time.

In general, my parents and my cousin have had a lasting influence on me. My parents taught me the need to work hard in order to achieve my dreams in life.  My cousin also works in the healthcare industry; she has served as a key mentor in developing my interest in this career path. While I previously participated in cultural activities, I do not derive a substantial portion of my identity from such activities. Indeed, I usually get most of my encouragement and motivation from work  from fellow students, colleagues, and supervisors.  I hope to learn more about myself through this course and through valuable internship experiences. My career is very important to me, and I hope to derive a greater understanding of how I am through it.
