Socialization Process of the Cubans in the U.S., Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 269

Essay

Introduction

For Cubans, their entry into the United States signifies a chance for a new life; one that has numerous opportunities in terms of growth and development. This however, is not the case owing to the various stories that show a different perspective of the socialization process of Cubans. A look at the different experiences displays the difference between the United States and Cuba. Both countries are similar in that they both have black and white nationals. Despite this, the socialization of the two countries differs due to the different form of leadership.

The reign of Fidel Castro saw the eradication of racism in all social arrangements and classes in Cuba. The United States on the other hand still displays an immense amount of racism between the two races. Cubans who arrived in the country in 1994 have changed the way in which they socialize with each other. The white Cubans socialize with Caucasian Americans while the black Cubans identify themselves as black Americans. In the case of the white Cubans, the only contact they have with their black counterparts is during their working hours. This is credited to their low level of education that determines their employment opportunities.

Black Cubans on the other hand socialize with black Americans making their experience entirely different. They have a harder time adjusting in that they have to learn how to walk, talk and generally behave in public. This is attributed the socialization dynamic in the United States that still observes a number of racial stereotypes. Cubans have as a result drifted from their previous ideologies which placed emphasis on unity as opposed to segregation.
