Soldier’s Home, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 459

Essay
  1. Harold Krebs had served in the military during World War I. The setting of the “Soldier’s Home” was Krebs’ small, conservative town in Oklahoma. The town seems like a quite one where everyone knew each other; the physical environment did not change since Krebs left for war. The story does not directly deal with the war; it is about the soldier’s return to a quite town. The story paints a clear picture of the social setting in Krebs’ town; this was said to have been what had changed since he left and the town had moved on without him. Krebs doesn’t seem to fit in anymore.
  2. The picture of Krebs with the German girls reflects on his experience of war; it was gray and empty. This was because people had expected that he had great stories to tell, but the war he had gone through was nothing like what they thought. He was anonymous during the war, much like the picture.
  3. Krebs went through something not every adolescent would go through. The battles had left him scarred and obviously disturbed – this is seen in him wanting to talk about it, maybe to vent. The only thing stopping him from talking about the battles were everyone else’s thoughts on the matter. He believed that they had heard all the atrocious stories, and that his stories would only bore them. He did not want to look as monotonous as his war experience.
  4. Krebs did not want any complications or consequences because he had seen the consequences of war. He seemed to have been traumatized, seeing that the author repeated the line which stated that he did not want any consequences. War had changed his perspective about work and girls drastically; it was as if he lost the desire to live. It was as if war killed his spirit. The difference between Germany France and his hometown were the girls. Krebs liked Germany more, most likely because there was more going on than his quite hometown. The story presented two conflicts; one was internal and one was external. The internal conflict was how Krebs could not reconcile his feelings about war; he was still disturbed and was experiencing the after-shock. The external conflict was with Krebs’ mother who did not understand why Krebs could not resume his life- get a job, settle down, things like that.
  5. The author called the protagonist Krebs, instead of referring to him by his first name. When you watch war movies, you see people being called by their last names, this probably symbolizes how Krebs’ life was stuck in the war, even though the war was long over. The significance of his sister calling him Hare is probably because Krebs is hiding like a scared rabbit from the expectations of society.
