Solution-Focused Therapy, Research Paper

Solution-focused therapy emphasizes identifying and building on the strengths and resources of families and communities rather than focusing on their issues or weaknesses (Young, 2009, pp. 7-12). In the case of bullying and community violence, solution-focused therapy views the problem as a behavior pattern maintained by the family’s interactions and communication (Young, 2009, pp. 7-12). The approach is practical in solving discrimination and exclusion, among other inequalities Jo and her family might face in the new society.

From a solution-focused therapy perspective, bullying and community violence are complex issues shaped by cultural, social, and environmental factors (Young, 2009, pp. 7-12). For a fact, solution-focused therapy aims at resolving the presenting complaints as expeditiously as possible (Copur, 2016, pp. 15-17). The family therapist must work with Jo’s family to identify the underlying causes of bullying and violence that Taylor might have experienced, developing practical solutions to build on the existing strengths and resources in the community.

As a minority population in the new community, Jo’s family will eventually adapt by devising strategies to guarantee resistance to several forms of daily micro aggressions (Copur, 2016, pp. 15-17). The best way to approach the issues presented in the case study is for the family therapist to focus on the future. Copur (2016) supports empowering Jo and her family to take control of their lives and develop solutions to their issues in the new society (pp. 15-17). Undoubtedly, solution-focused therapy recommends approaching family and community problems in a collaborative, strength-based approach since children are most likely to be responsive to that which takes place in their communities (Young, 2009, pp. 7-12). Although young children are most likely to be aware of violence as it occurs in their homes (Young, 2009, pp. 7-12). Identifying and building on community strengths and resources help create positive, sustainable changes in the lives of people especially children affected by presenting issues (Copur, 2016, pp. 15-17).
