Sources Credibility, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 287

Essay

The Wikipedia article on Saudi Arabia is not credible because it is an open source article which means anyone can edit it. In other words, no control measures exist to ensure only accurate information is presented in the article. The article is also not credible because some of the sources cited in the article are less reliable or not academic in nature.

Stephen Hawking’s A Briefer History of Time is a reliable source because it has been written by one of the most renowned scientists of our times. Professor Hawking is a professor at University of Cambridge and this book of his has sold millions of copies worldwide. The source credibility is also strengthened by the fact that he is a #1 New York Times bestselling author (Hawking and Mlodinow). Another fact that makes this source a reliable one is that Professor Hawking has published several books as well as research papers (Hawking, Publications). He now leads the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) as well as the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology (CTC) at the University of Cambridge (Hawking, Stephen Hawking). Being one of the biggest names in science, a publication by Professor Hawking can be trusted to be a reliable source.

Erich von Daniken’sThe Eyes of the Sphinx is not a credible source because the claims made in the book have not been widely accepted or credited by the scientific community. Another issue with the source is that it mostly presents claims that are at best hypotheses rather than facts backed by concrete evidence. Thus, the author’s approach to making claims lacks the academic rigor.
