South Miami Farmer’s Market, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 310

Essay

The South Miami Farmers Market promotes itself as a location for home?grown goods to be sold to active informed residences and other members of the community. .  The first thing I noticed when I visited the South Miami farmer’s market, located on Sunset Drive in South Miami Florida, is the close proximity the market was to other nearby community resources such as a local Dade county public library and  South Miami City Hall. Upon first entry to the market there is a visible clock tower. As you drive into the parking lot, a wide range of umbrellas, and tints become visible.

I observed the sale of a variety of sustainably grown produce, like eggs, meats, dairy, and other value-added products. There were also locally made green products, such as solar panels and alternative energy powered devices for sale. The markets as a whole seemed to be very environmentally conscious and sustainability was definitely a theme shared by both merchants and consumers. In addition to a wide range of organize products, there was also recyclable trash receptors and products created from hemp. The market was as much a place to buy produce as it was a location to interact with informed and active members of the Miami, Dade community.

The telling thing I observed about the entire experience was the energy created by the people interacting, combined with the overall setup of the market. Everything seemed to be authentically driven by the community. All of the tints and stands looked as though they could have been setup or broken down within a couple of hours. While some merchants clearly viewed one another as competitors, for the most part people appeared to work together and support one another. While they were a few officers on patrol, I didn’t notice them until leaving the Farmer’s market and yet the environment felt very family friendly and safe.
