How to Identify a Project
Part I
Topic: Importance of Special Education Teacher Requirements | Subject Area: Special Education |
Issue | There are not enough Special Education Requirements for Special Education Teachers |
Evidence | Not all Special Education teachers are required to have a Master’s Degree in their field in all states, not all special education teachers have to participate in continued education, and many special education teachers do not collaborate with other teachers to better their knowledge of special needs children. |
Deficiencies | It is important to know what requirements are involved to be a Special Education Teacher, how these teachers must obtain further knowledge in their fields if they are not required to, and how these teachers can collaboratively work together to provide a better school system for children with disabilities. |
Solution | The project will provide more information on the current requirements of Special Education teachers, will provide requirements that should be put into place to make a better atmosphere for the children, will show us what needs to be done in order to get the teachers up to par with current educational standards, and will allow the parents and community to have more respect and more confidence in the Special Education teachers within the school system. |
Part II
- Why is it important?
This topic is very important because it provides a clear picture of what Special Education teachers need to have in order to perform their duties as teachers. It shows parents and the community what is required (academically) for a Special Education teacher in order for them to teach children with disabilities. This topic also discusses some of the most important requirements, what requirements should be put into effect, and explains how collaborative teaching can help the teachers as well as the students they work with on a daily basis.
- Verify there is a lack of research on the topic?
I do not feel there is a lack of research on the topic. However, I think that the research that has been done and the programs that have been implemented are not being used to their full potential. It’s as if someone did the research and nobody wants to take the time to actually implement what has been said.
- Justify the feasibility…is it doable? (access to people and sites)
This is a very doable study. I am able to obtain research from many different areas such as the internet, books, journals, articles in educational journals, and professionals within the field of education. The study may have some limitations, but that does not mean that it cannot be done. Limitations are a part of all studies. Past research can be found and new research can be done.
- Do you have/can you gain the skills required to do it?
I already have the skills to do the amount of research that is needed in order to answer this question. I am able to refer to online website, articles, educational journals, and books. I am also able to speak to teachers, education professionals, administrators, counselors, and many others.
Part III
Summarize the work provided in Parts I and II by writing 3-4 paragraphs describing your project idea.
The project idea that I have in mind will require Special Education teachers to obtain more than just a Bachelor’s degree in their chosen field. The evidence shows that many Special Education teachers are only required to receive a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in order to work with children with special needs. The research does not state much about collaborating with other teachers or continued education. The only thing it really says is that some Special Education teachers may go back for a Master’s degree if they want to further their education, but it is not mandatory to have one before the onset of their career. This is something that should be mandatory if these individuals are going to work with our children with disabilities. The topic is very important to parents who play an active role in their child’s education and they need to feel as if they are putting faith in the right people.
There has been quite a bit of research done on the requirements that must be completed before a teacher can instruct children with disabilities. They must have at least a Bachelor’s degree in education and a certificate in Special Education. However, it is important for teachers that are working in the Special Education field to obtain a higher education and participate in continuing education courses in order to work well with students as the times are changing. The research states this; however, programs and the research are not being implemented to their full potential. Teachers, of all kinds, must also be able to work collaboratively with other teachers. Unfortunately, this is not a requirement either. I’d like to change that.
The solution to the problem is to mandate that all teachers going into the field of Special Education be required to have a least a Master’s degree in education, certification to teach Special Education, and to participate in continuing education courses at least every 2 years so that these children have a better chance at succeeding in the educational system. The project idea is very doable. It can be implemented if the research is done correctly and the right individuals are available to speak with in order to get it mandated. There are many outlets for research such as books, the internet, journals, professionals within the field, and articles in educational journals. A solution to the problem is very feasible. A person just needs to know what resources to use and the right people to talk to in reference to the requirements for Special Education teachers.
