Taylor Productions is dedicated to the development of children’s speech and language needs. Expressive language problems will be discussed in this particular podcast with relation to special education. These podcasts give students and their parents’ resources to learn and understand more about speech and language disorders in children. Many students with language problems are simply misdiagnosed or simply overlooked. This has helped teachers to take a different approach to how they address students with speech and language disorders. There will always be children with unique needs and parents with high expectations for their children. This podcast will raise awareness so parents can inspire those to listen to children with fine tune ears to get the children the appropriate help they need.

The symptoms of an expressive language problem refer to the ability to express their thoughts through the use of spoken symbols at an age appropriate level. This impairs the student to take part with other students in regular communication and play with other peers. The child experiencing such problems is often left shy to ask questions. The teacher should watch for signs of difficulty recalling the names of peoples and things with regards to a conversation. This would happen constantly because of a developed condition. The child may have problems combining words to make proper sentences such as leaving out words. You may observe the child rambles without making a point. The child may over generalize points such as talking about all labels as the same thing. The child may be shy in all social settings. The child presents with dull effect and facial expressions. He may use words like “like”, “you know”, “uh”. He may pause frequently with his speech. His communication may not seem age appropriate. All of these characteristics need to be compared to the child’s age to determine if he/she has an expressive language problem.

Dr. Reid Taylor speaks about developmental milestones in podcast five. This is an on location event in which Dr. Yacobacci speaks of children’s developmental milestones. She has observed children in various countries with relation to speech and motor growth. Evaluators must look at delays in speech and abilities to understand what is said to the young person. It is of dire importance for parents’ to realize a child will often be delayed with speech. Many times there is an issue that develops so there must be an understanding of the stages of development of a child with relation to speech. For example crying is a very important part of communication development from the age of birth to six months. If there is no differentiation in the cry the parents’ need to start observing the child even at an early age. Another issue to observe is “babbling” or “cooing”. The different sounds come in depending upon the positioning of the child. If a parent does not notice any babbling in their child then this is a sign of language developmental milestones to come in the future. A child makes sounds for meaning and a parent must key into these sounds. For instance a child with autism normally does not babble. The hearing impaired child will not progress with the babbling past the age of six months. You can tell by your child’s eye gaze if there will be issues with language. The child should look at you when you speak to your young child. If you are holding a child and they are looking at you and a horn peeps the child should either turn or move their eyes. This is called localization to the sound to find out where the sound is coming from. This could mean a hearing impairment or a developmental delay. At the age of seven to twelve months the children begin to “jargon”. The child progresses to a pattern of language they hear around them. They try to repeat what they hear from others and they look at you and may ask a question with upward inclination. There may be a downward reflection if the child is simply stating something to you. This is what normal developmentally language children do. If this does not occur you may want to have your child tested. Now if your child is in a multi-language family the jargon may be limited and the downward reflection may be reflected as “incidental learning”. This is not a reflection of language delay.

It is a parent’s job to talk back to babies and developmental toddlers to continue their language learning. This is how they develop their language skills. The child must be acknowledged even if the parent does not understand what the child is saying. Children eventually go into a two-word production about the age of eighteen months. A child should have fifty understandable words at the age of eighteen months but not necessarily that you will understand the child completely. He will often use his own words with a cognitive connection to what he understands the word to be.
