Staff Member’s Performance, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 220

Essay

According to the ANA American Nurses Association, the nursing process is “the essential core of practice for the registered nurse to deliver holistic, patient-focused care.” It contains five major components; namely, assessment, diagnosis, outcomes/planning, implementation, and evaluation.  These sequential components provide an excellent blueprint for addressing a member’s performance shortcomings.

The first step would be to collect and analyze data about the member in a systematic manner.  Using the nursing process as a model, list not only the shortcomings of the members, but also his or her “psychological, sociocultural, spiritual, economic, and lifestyle factors” (ibid.) in order to thoroughly understand the reasons for the shortcomings and, as a result, make a diagnosis, which, as in the nursing process, would be the basis for the care plan of the member. Now the supervisor would, as part of an evaluation process with an employee, set “measurable and achievable short-and-long-range goals” (ibid.) and put these in the employee’s file along with setting a date for a meeting (in approximately two months) to review what progress has been made.  However, before that time, the supervisor would watch and mentor the employee, give  positive reinforcement as earned, and note anything significant on his or her file.  The supervisor’s care should also be evaluated.
