Staffing & Nursing Care Delivery Models, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 455

Essay

Analyze the nursing care delivery model used in your workplace.

Currently there are three nursing care delivery models, which could be utilized in my workplace. They are team nursing; primary nursing and progressive patient care. These models vary depending on the organization’s policies. Presently, the team model is used in my workplace. This model is beneficial because it requires the articulation of team leadership. Also, team members become integral to successful patient outcomes. Each team member brings to the group skills necessary for completion of daily tasks in rendering specific care to pateints (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).

For example, teams in my unit consist of registered nurses (RNs); licensed practical nurses (LPNs); certified nursing (CNAs) and patient care technicians. Delegating duties is consistent with the nurse’s practice licensed.  Medications are administered by registered nursed along with all complex nursing care. Certified nursing assistants conduct bedside nursing involving baths and physical care. They are supervised by registered nurses who have full responsibility of patient care after delegation of duties. Licensed practical nurses form the link between RNs and LPNs(Cherry & Jacob, 2014).

Evaluate staffing for your unit and lines of responsibilityand accountability associated with the model used.

Critics of team model argue that the quality of patient care could become fragmentedand questionable especially if nurses are new to the clinical setting and their competence is not verified. On a busy shift it is difficult for a single staff nurse to supervise along with taking responsibility for patient care as a team (Nursing theories, 2014).

Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the model in your workplace.

The advantage of using the team model in my work environment is that we can work together achieving goals as a group, each person applying his/her specific expertise to benefit pateints in the clinical setting. A great disadvantage, however, is that some people are not as articulate as others. Therefore sometimes it would appear that some tasks are not accomplished as effect of quickly because it would appear that the RN has to wait until the CAN finish a task with the patient before serving meds etc( Nursing theories, 2014).

If you could choose the nursing care delivery model for your workplace, which would you choose and why?

If I had to choose a nursing care delivery model I would select the patient progressive patient care.Progressive Patient Care  is a technique whereby  patients are categorized according to their needs and delegation of nurses are done based on the intensity of care required(Smeltzer, 2003).
