Star Players: Required or Not Required to Score the Most Points, Essay Example

Pages: 9

Essay

Star Players are the backbone of every single team in sports, people have accepted this as a natural fact for years and the proof behind this clearly supports this concept which is why I am inclined to believe this as well. Everyone has a right to believe whatever they want regarding this issue, but the facts are what they are and there are plenty of people who will support it because it is all they have ever known. Teachers who teach athletes or have athletes in their classes say that star athletes or athletes to a lesser degree should concentrate more on their studies instead of spending so much of their time on the field, a smart athlete is a well-prepared athlete. For coaches who support a star player’s right to practice their ‘craft’ more than their education will argue that the star player’s attention to his art will ensure that they will always stay in tip-top shape in order to continue winning games, teachers will argue otherwise. A star player’s ample time training comes as a great benefit to the team they play for because their skills is what makes the team great.

Some people believe that having a star player is definitely required because without the star, the team wouldn’t score a single point. However, there are some that believe that having players that are just as good as the star player is capable of picking up the star player’s slack if they are not there hence proving that the team is capable of scoring points without the star player’s help ergo not needing the star player’s help at all. So are star players needed to score the most points to win or not as this paper will discuss.

I got my first-hand look at this issue when I went to a basketball game with my wife’s cousins, I saw the star player and the entire team. At a point in the game, I saw the star player get pushed by a member of the opposing team and the star player fell and got hurt. One of the other teammates picked up the ball and was scoring baskets like it was nothing, the star player was out for the rest of the game so he could recover. As previously stated, this issue has been the topic of much heated debate by both the teachers and the coach. These two parties have conflicting views about the importance of having their star player on the team which benefits one side but not the other, it is a very conflicting issue. People would be interested in knowing that a star player does not always need to be in the game in order for the team to do good or great, any player who practice is capable of being able to play just as good and defensively as the star player themselves.

I gathered from this that having people stand by a star player’s decision to practice more than study were people who have gone through those things themselves. I found that there were parents who were completely for it while other parents and concerned family members were against it, it can be argued that even though a star player is taken out of the game because of school work or injury, the team is still no worse for the wear which means that they managed just fine without their ‘star’. However, there have been sport reports and evidence that support that if a team does not have their star player for whatever reason, that team is better off forfeiting the game because the star player is the only way they’ll win.

It stands to reason that athletes in the past did not have to worry so much about their education because they were taken care of, their talent saw to that. But, concerned educators argued that this was not ideal because the star player is endangering their educational future which could have drastic consequences for their plans for college.

Throughout time, many people have come to the conclusion that every team is only as good as their star player and it can be said from a coach’s perspective that is the absolute truth. Parents who are educators and are just plain parents have felt strongly that talent without an education will likely leave a person starving not just for knowledge, but starving from not being able to take care of themselves like everyone else. Concerned parents take the position that the team will manage just fine without the star player on the team because if the star player’s parents force the coach to bench the star player then it would show that the coach cares about the star player’s education as well as their talent.

People like a good show and if the star player on the team can give them that show then it’s worth having him or her on the team, having any player try to do what the star player does seems like an impossibility but it is everything but. Any player on any team can play just as well as the star player because it is a known fact that the star player is not the only one who practices or trains to be the best or to be better, I saw a 5’10 basketball player that they can make layups and 3 pointers even dunk like a 6’2 ½ basketball player can; his jumping height was excellent. I have seen basketball players who are just 6’0 tall dunk on a 6’9 basketball player which came off to me as incredible.

People who have gone to basketball games have seen for themselves as I have that even if the star player of the team is not there or is out of the game, the team is still capable of winning the game. Let it be known that it is not always the star player who leads a team to victory, it is a team who helps and support each other who win games. I have gone to many basketball and football games where I have seen this and not every game, but there were a few games where I saw the star player was not in the game like they should have been due to circumstances within as well as beyond their control.

There are many generation X’ers who have raised their children to believe that education comes first as well as if you’re a part of a team then you are just as important as the star player because everyone has something to contribute, keeping up with the team was your responsibility which you could do as long as you stayed up on your studies. These days, people have come to rely on a person’s talent instead of their education and if the star player was needed for a big game then they got the star player no matter how much he did or didn’t do in their classes. I had a chance to witness a huge blowout of an argument between the star player’s parents and the school’s educators, the parent’s argued that the star player of the high school basketball team was needed for the season opener big game because the rest of the team didn’t play as well as the star player.

However, little did the star player’s parents know that another player on the team was being trained take the star player’s place; the star player could concentrate on bringing their grades up which they needed to do. The parents, who were not educated themselves, cared more about their son’s talent than his education and it could be said as well as that they were even more deluded about him playing college ball with his grades just barely above a 2.0. Every sports team needs their star player, but let it be known that there is someone on the team who is capable of taking over for the star player so it becomes that having the star player on the team is more of a welcomed aid than a requirement.

Sadly, there were other parents who sided with the star player’s parents, the star player was no more needed on that team than the rest of the guys because everyone is important including him which also means that everyone is expendable and another player can be trained to take the star player’s place if need be. There was nothing more or less at stake for not having the star player on the team.

Other people would oppose the fact that leaving the star player off the team to take care of educational priorities is the right thing to do because the team is able to score points without the star player’s help, there have been many football and baseball games won and lost based on this logic. There have been players for football and baseball teams that have been benched for practically whole games because of injuries and violations, the rest of the team had to play the game without their star player in the game. Interestingly enough, the team did just fine on their own and still manage to beat the other team so many points to nothing or so many points over so many points.

People have become accustomed to acknowledging certain facts about certain teams and those facts have dictated the team’s fate in the eyes of those who have followed them from the beginning, a team is good but only if everyone on their team can shoot from the 3 point line or their team is on fire when they get more goals than the opposing team. As most people well know, it could be either the star player of the team or a regular player that scores points for the team not just the star player alone like everyone has come to believe. Even though people have seen this happen in sports all over the world, it has still become an incontrovertible fact of our existence and those who choose to see it as truth. Take the Chicago Bulls’ last game. The Chicago Bulls lost 94-99 to the Cleveland Cavaliers and even though Michael Jordan isn’t on the team anymore, they are still playing games as well as winning them.

A star player with skills apparent do not a complete team make, every player is able to contribute a skill of theirs to the team which helps the team win games. Too many are the people who would argue with this in the aspect that the teams are more or less doing better without the star player or without the star player in the game but the truth is absolute, the opposition can argue that the star player is needed to score the most points when it is just the contrary.

The question of whether the star player of any team is required or needed can be asked, can the team manage better with or without the aid of their star player and the answer is an emphatic yes. Going back to the proof of the latest basketball game, a team can score points without the lead of their star player and still get to the point where they are winning or winning by a few points. Teams all over the world have manage to always have a consistency plan in place so they can prepare for the worst case scenario which is when one of their important players have an accident, it is this preemptive plan that keeps teams from losing to their rivals or opponents and keeps people from wanting a refund on the game they are paying to watch.

No matter what, every team will always find a way to manage without their star player because the star player isn’t the only one who cares about practicing and making sure that they master everything they need to in order to help the team win, it is not just a star player effort, it is a team effort. People often lose perspective on this because they have grown so used to just cheering on the star player of the team like they’re carrying the rest of the team, it can be said that the team carries the star player when they are not feeling 100% which can easily be the case when the star player is suffering from something bad or recovering in some way, shape or form. Managing without the star player is something that every team has manage to do over the ages, it has become something that some teams couldn’t avoid because their livelihoods as well as their winning streak depended on it.

Another way of possibly examining this question is, is it mandatory for the star player to make every just about every shot in order to win the game; the answer is no. People expect this because they see the star player as that of a god of sports, they always expect big things from the star player hence their overall attention is fixed on the star player. The star player helps the team win not win all on his own.

So given everything that I’ve done and personally researched as well as witnessed, I gathered that it is not a requirement for the star player to score the most points in order to win the game because the other players on the team are capable of doing the same thing. Both the teachers as well as other educators and the coaches have made valid points about the importance of practice, and education. In the end, if the star player is taken out of the game for any reason then they there are others who can pick up their slack and take over for them. The star player being in the game makes things easier for the team they are on and are helping score points, but the star player does not have to be the one that score the most points in order to win the game.

Sport enthusiasts will argue that star players on every team are what makes the team invincible as well as winning, but there are other factors that make the team as good as they are. It is a known fact that practice makes perfect and as long as the team is practicing on a daily basis or at some points when they are able to then they are just as good as the star player, people cast their favor on the star player’s abilities and skills on the field but they are a part of a team and not a one man army like they are constantly praised to be. As previously stated, everyone on the team has something to contribute and that is what makes a team mighty and unstoppable.

I also cast my favor on the teachers and educators side of the argument that star players on every team should have some education under them because in this world, getting by on just talent alone isn’t enough and it is likely that they might need a back-up plan when something happens. There is nothing more reassuring than a person who has some education even if that person is the star player of the basketball team or soccer team. Practicing one’s craft is important but so is getting an education because even if the star player does not make the college or professional team, they’ll always be taken care of because of their educational background. Star players are not immune to natural disasters or the pitfalls in life they create.
