When thinking of the phrase “Work is not inherently valuable. It is valuable to the extent that it serves a purpose. Therefore, the main focus should be not on the work itself but on whether it achieves an end” (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2011) one must think of how this actually pertains to how work is valuable. The implications of this statement for healthcare leaders is that the work is not what is most valuable. The completion of the work is what is valuable. The way in which the work is done is valuable. The way in which leaders and their staff conduct themselves while doing the work is what makes that work valuable. The ending result is valuable because it shows how the work has been completed, whether poorly and not. In addition, this is saying that if the work does not serve a particular purpose, it is not specifically valuable. Work, in general, must serve a purpose. It must be planned, executed, and completed properly and in an ethical manner. Many individuals are working on something all the time, but it is the end result that is most valuable as that is what others are going to see. That is what others are going to remember. Many will not remember the work that was done throughout the process. They will remember how it ended, what came of it, and how it made things better. Everyone must have a purpose in the work that they do. If there is no purpose, the work is inherently mundane. It is just people running around completing tasks. The end is the most important as it helps people see what they did right, what they did wrong, how they could go about doing something differently, and what they actually achieved while working on the project. The work itself is a learning process. However, the value of the work is what is most important and that only comes at the very end, when everyone is able to see how things worked out and what made the work worthwhile. Most importantly, the idea that work isn’t valuable is difficult for people to understand as many believe that in order to achieve a result, a person must work. This is true. However, without purpose, without a passion for something, that end result will not come out nearly as well as it would with purpose.
