I am writing you regarding my studies at U/T. I would like to express my satisfaction and commitment regarding the course and subjects I learned about in the past three years. I am applying for a research study submission deadline extension based on the below described well-grounded reasons.

My Studies

The last three years: my experiences, studies, and support at U/T had been providing me with exceptional education. I became focused on interesting and specialist studies and became more knowledgeable at my field. Your institution added some real, logical or intrinsic experiences to enrich my personal perceptions of social and economic life.  For the past 3 academic years, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my academic studies sticking to the educational process philosophy. Truly, I have loved and enjoyed every minute of my academic studies and yet have been benefiting a lot from your community.  On a greater scale,  I had a great exposure to a high level education from outstanding professors and staff, and get to know of many languages and cultures.

My Research

The teaching and learning curriculum of the program has provided me a solid foundation of cultures and cultural awareness. It provided me with insight into English language diffusion and its effects to the rights of native language.  I focused on the Arabic language in Qatari society, and how English is detrimental in that specific context.  My research idea was praised by Dr. Julie K and agreed on becoming my co/supervisor.  She later referred me to Dr. Christine, who also found the research subject relevant and intriguing.  My research involves a critical study of the policy context of Qatar and Publisher Company, CDA Critical discourse analysis of two Grade seven English textbooks, granted by a personal contact: a high-school headmaster in Qatar, and a qualitative study of an interview with publisher agents and authors.

Rationale for extension application

Since the supervisory committee meeting on august 6^th 2014, I have decided to travel to Qatar with my supervisor and other committee member to gather more accurate data from one of the high schools. I intend to approach a headmaster, three teachers and seven students, as well as completing an observation of the school in which the study will take place. To complete the study, I had to submit my application to the educational board namely SEC (Supreme Educational Council).  The SEC have required plenty of materials to revise before they approve my project (see details in the form). This, of course, has delayed the work, as the response from SEC took nearly three months. Regarding the publisher agents and authors, I have received two approvals from one in the UK, and one in the UAE.  The agents and authors are willing to participate, but for some reason they asked to postpone the interviews two times so far.

Further, I have written and amended thesis chapters 1-6.  I am currently writing and conducting a qualitative inquiry chapter, which, includes interviews with authors and the publishing agents in the United Kingdom. I experienced difficulty in initiating contact and correspondence with the publisher agents, which has also delayed the completion of the project. However, after much persistence I have finally made an arrangement with those in the UK to participate in the interview in few weeks.

The writing of the thesis was prolonged due to the difficult and intensive application of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).  I have thus, read around 27 scholarly books and articles regarding the methodological analysis tool (CDA) and 92 references in total for the thesis, which includes of both English and Arabic books, references and websites.  My thesis Supervisor has been extremely cooperative and her insight and expertise has contributed greatly to enhancing the quality of my work. She has recommended me with necessary journal articles and books regarding the research analysis tool (CDA).  She has also reviewed chapter drafts 1-5 and offered her feedback at which point amendments were made to these chapters, therefore all that is currently missing is the qualitative interview data, subject to interviewee availability.

I am applying for a reasonable extension time, so I can conduct the interviews with publishers, authors, and agents. This will allow me to analyze and code that data in order to complete the final chapter. The qualitative interview details are crucial for the study and are related to the main research thesis. The interviews will bring to light the complex issues confronting different stakeholders that work to produce English Second Language texts for Qatari high school students.

Once all the data from interviews is collected I will edit and revise this information in consultation my thesis committee. The revision will take place after thesis is reviewed by the committee members.  Upon completion, the thesis will be electronically submitted.

I am very committed to completing my research to summarize what I have accomplished in my academic journey.  There is only a single final step missing to allow me complete my work, as I have already written six chapters of my thesis and thus five have been reviewed by the supervisor. I understand that I am only allowed to complete my last final step within the extension period. I am looking for an extension, as I would like to complete the research to the highest standard possible, so the research community can benefit from the results of the interview. I truly hope that the Registers Office will make a favorable decision regarding my extension request, so I can finish the work that can benefit the entire academic community.
