Explain why you have chosen to become specialize in Family Nurse Practitioner over the other types of advanced practice nursing.

I strongly believe that every person exists on earth for a given reason and purpose. No one just exists without a certain thing that he is supposed to do in life before death. No one can accomplish a purpose meant for another person. Therefore, everyone has to fulfill his or her own purpose before he or she can be fulfilled in life. I am also convinced that everything in life has a calling. No one can rise one morning and decide that he wants to do a precise thing as the purpose in life. This may not work.

At this point, I wish to bring out a disclaimer. In the discussion about purpose, I do not imply something that one does to earn a living. A purpose in life is more than just for earning a living. It goes beyond, to give one fulfillment in life. A purpose is something that one does and feels to have uniquely assisted humanity, besides just earning a living from the same. This, therefore, gives another objective of a purpose. A purpose is intended to assist humanity. God creatively designed each person with a given assignment as far as humanity is concerned.

Therefore, I chose to specialize in Family Nurse Practitioner over the other types of advanced practice nursing because am convinced that I seek to achieve this purpose in my life. I am not pursuing Family Nursing Practitioner just as a career but also as a God given assignment in life. When I discovered this issue, I realized that I had this burden for the medical conditions at the family level. When growing up, I was hurt seeing many families in our neighboring community suffering simply because they lacked proper medical care. Unfortunately, some families lost some of their members, especially newly born babies. I was hurt by this, and it created a craving in me to go out and assist families in the provision of proper medical care.

Describe your future as an advance practice nurse (include type of clinical practice)?

As an advanced practice, I intend to be registered as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) after graduating from my Master of nursing. This will give me the freedom to practice nursing without any limitations. I will have the legal mandate to carry out the diverse tasks that are charged with the advanced nurse practitioners. I will be able to assist various patients with both physical and mental conditions, by diagnosing the disease and prescribing appropriate medication to them.

However, following my purpose in life, I intend to extent my knowledge to the family level. I intend to provide proper, affordable medication to the suffering families, especially back in the village and slum areas. I may mainly venture out in the provision of prenatal care and family planning services, provision of proper childcare services and care to the elderly in the society. In this way, I will be able to assist various families fully; especially those that cannot afford to acquire proper medication due to poverty.

In carrying out my responsibilities successfully in the society as far as my career and purpose is concerned, I intend to do various things. I intend to set up pilot projects of village healthcare centers in various villages and slums, identified to be in dire need of proper medication due to inaccessibility to government health centers. This will assist me in reaching many families in the entire country. I will recruit a team of like-minded nurses to assist me in this venture. As the saying goes no man is an island, I cannot go out single handed in this venture. I also form a proper network with medical doctors in the family care, to assist me in getting additional and appropriate diagnostic measures in this field. Lastly, I intend to continue working with various research institutions, to identify more needs at the family level as I get appropriate treatment for them.
