Strategies to Motivate and Persuade Nurses, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 389

Essay

The use of research findings and knowledge derived from research should be a focus for any nurse in a position of leadership. Appropriately, this concern should be addressed through the use of research knowledge. Staying informed of intervention techniques would provide a solid foundation for encouraging the use of research-based practice. A systematic review by Thompson and colleagues (2007) investigated the efficiency of several interventions in the attempt to persuade nurses to use research knowledge in practice. They found that educational meetings with local opinion experts and the formation of multidisciplinary committees were effective at increasing the use of research in nursing. Collaboration with local educational institutions could provide an effective pathway through which these interventions could be implemented. However, the authors also noted that education meetings led by researchers did not show evidence of improving the rate of research knowledge usage. This may be the result of a communication problem due to the use of technical language by researchers.

Evidence also suggests that nurses use less research based knowledge over time (Forsman, Gustavsson, Ehrenberg, Rudman, & Wallin, 2009). In order to counter this trend, any intervention aimed at increasing the usage of research findings in nursing should be stratified to account for the need to more intensely address this issue as the career of a nurse advances. Additionally, participation in the execution of research that is directly related to increasing the prevalence of research knowledge usage in nursing would be a tremendous way to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issue. With further understanding comes an increased likelihood of the successful employment of research usage interventions.
