Student Entitlement, Essay Example

Essay

Examination is one of the most effective approaches in evaluating the ability of the students to grasp the course concepts following their completion of an educational program or training. It is essential for students to understand the logic behind an examination. Currently, various issues such as student entitlement, special treatment, and threats of lawsuits have emerged raising questions on the meaning and objective of an examination. It would be impossible to determine the level of success achieved by students after completing educational programs or training in case they fail to sit for any examinations in their relevant institutions. From this perspective, examinations are valuable in justifying the fact that the student was attentive during the course leading to acquisition of adequate knowledge, skills, and expertise in the course of training.

In some contexts, students do not integrate the required level of commitment and hard work in their pursuit for degree or professional course. Most of these students attend to other issues rather than concentrating on the course objectives. The only substantive way of determining whether such students have grasped the key course concepts is through examining them on the concepts covered.

Cases of student entitlement, special treatment, and threats of lawsuits have been eminent in the nursing department. For instance, students disqualified for poor performances have threatened nursing institutions with potential lawsuits on the ground that they do not deserve to be disqualified. It is essential to note that nursing department operates in accordance with the laid down rules and principles. There is no instant disqualification by the nursing department. It is only in extreme cases that students who fail to achieve course objectives in accordance with the laid down rules are disqualified. Prior to any disqualification, students get academic warnings on the need to adjust their academic performance.

Any complaint from the student should be registered at the academic warning stage. This would make it easier for the institution as well as the student to follow up the sincerity of the complaint. For the nursing department to disqualify a student, it must analyze the situation effectively to ensure that the action is merited (Rao, 2003). This approach would ensure that workers in the job market are competent with valuable skills and expertise to address needs of the employment opportunities.
