Success and Failure in Argument, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 298

Essay

In view of the article by Margaret Webb, she has managed to succeed in arguing her case and convincing the reader that indeed Canada needs to accommodate a strategy for national food. In the opening paragraph, she has managed to convince the reader by devaluing the current food system that she says has failed to serve people as priority just as the healthcare. Arguably, she has pointed the key areas that people have failed in terms of food production namely the types produced, the way they are produced and methods of sharing the same. By use of statistics and figures, Webb manages to win the reader in that; she has captured the situation as it is. She is not just addressing things out of blues; rather, she is talking business. By bringing on board what the ‘People’s Food Policy Project’ has achieved in dealing with the problems facing the Canadian food system, the author makes her argument credible and authentic. In short, she has succeeded in her argument and the reader is fully convinced.

In the article by Noah Richler, he has failed to argue in a credible manner and the reader only gets more confused. The opening paragraph captures a situation in England although the essay is supposed to address the tendency of consuming local food among Canadians. Same case applies when he talks about Paris and Colombian local foods. The approach of comparing so many local areas within Canada is equally confusing to the reader and the argument ends up being jumbled up. Even so, the author is successful in his argument towards the end of the article, as he employs a conversation between him and a teenager at a stall. By so doing, he is practical and easily connects with the reader, making his argument successful.
