This paper posits to explore the importance of supplemental classification. Codes of supplementary classification are imperative to facilitate reporting some conditions as well as circumstances which have got significant impact on an injury or a specific disease. Some situations require the use of important to use these supplemental classifications. In the situation of applying supplementary classification by the health care providers, it is imperative that ICD-9-CM code is also reported to give an indication of the condition (Slee, Slee & Schmidt, 2000).  Health care providers have the responsibility for correct coding in the process of a claim submission for a service or an item. V codes sometimes become imperative to supplement diagnostic codes which are already in sue

Use of V codes is a preliquisite for circumstances identification of related situation that are encountered other circumstances apart from the actual injury or disease. V codes are important tools in reporting of problems as well as factors which are likely to pose significant influence to the current care provision or in future. Assignment of suitable V code is critically vital in consideration of reporting, avoidance of inaccurate denials as well as a medical necessity. Some V codes are applicable as principal diagnosis, others as additional codes while others still falls in the category of principal or secondary. However, the most important consideration in the existing difference in reporting of V codes with regard to the guidelines of sequencing for outpatient and the inpatients (Tahira, Hira & Cazilia, 2005).

An example of a V code aftercare visit codes. This is applicable in the situation that initial treatment has been completed but a requirement for continued care has been identified with the patient to facilitate a successful healing phase. After care V code also facilitates long-term disease consequences.
