Shiokari Pass contains a powerful message in its text. In the moment where all hell broke loose and everybody was going crazy because they were moments away from dying, Nobuo decided to pray. Moments after, he remembered that the coach has an emergency brake. At first, the brake proved to be effective for a short period of time, but the train was picking up speed once again. Noticing that the train was not going too fast, Nobuo figured that he could sacrifice his own life in order to save all of the passengers on the train. The act of benevolence portrayed in the passage shows what a caring individual Nobuo was within the novel.

Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefsfrom Deep River tells the story about a young man that goes by the name Otsuwho is conflicted with his religion. Not so much conflicted, but he believes that it does not matter what religion individuals decide to pursue because all religions end up in the same place at the end. In the story, Otsu has a dream where he challenges an older student about why what Otsu believes in is not intrinsically wrong. The novel states, however, that Otsu is only able to have this kind of courage in his dreams, not in real life. Otsu eventually wakes up to greet the morning sun and he begins to pray. In his prayer, it appears that Otsu will finally have enough courage to stand up for what he believes in.

Revenge (II) contains a powerful message in its text. This perspective is a fresh one, as opposed to the kind of perspective that is often giving of the crucifixion of the Son of God. It could be inferred that the author is referring to the devil in many instances in the story because of the manner in which there are several implications in the evil all around the event unfolding. The final message of this passage tells that those who crucify the son of man are the worst of all. This text could be perceived in many ways. Personally, I believe this story is told through the devils eyes.

On The Cross is a story within a story in which oxen speak of how great they are. Putting aside everything that the oxen boast about, it is found that they are all back-stabbing one another. The main message of the story is as follows: He who takes captives will himself be taken captive; he who slays with the sword must be slain. This story is a great one because of how it is told with such simplicity, yet is speaks volumes on various topics. Mainly, what I got from the story is that one should never boast too much about himself and attack other individuals. For other people, they might perceive a very distinct message from the story.
